If you are confused about threads, chats and notes, join the club. Everyone’s struggling with Substack right now.
Hi there,
I hope you are having a good week. This week I have been writing a chapter for my book about how to use Substack’s engagement tools for growth - think polls, comments, discussion threads, chat and notes.
The biggest challenge I had with this chapter was untangling the overlapping functions of threads, chat and notes. I ended up having to write a whole primer on what they are, and how they are different.
You can see the primer on Medium, by clicking the preview below (no membership required, as long as you haven’t read more than 3 free Medium articles this month).
By the way, if you are feeling bad for not using threads, chat and notes in your new publication, don’t despair. If your subscriber base is still small I think they are an unhelpful distraction - I explain why in the Medium post.
Hopefully, the primer helps untangle Substack’s features for you. Let me know if you found it helpful. And, as always, have a great week!
Karen
P.S. If you already got an email from Medium about that post, sorry for disrespecting your inbox (and not following my own advice about how often to email subscribers!)
Terrific, helpful explanation of how threads, chat and notes work. Thank you, Karen Cherry. Free explanation here: https://karen-cherry.medium.com/substack-threads-chats-and-notes-a-primer-57dbcddc75ea
Substack's different features can definitely be tricky to navigate! I’d love to check out your primer to get some clarity on threads, chats, and notes. It's always helpful to have a guide that breaks down the differences. Off to Medium now! See more: https://acebookwriters.com/ghostwriting
