Thank you for sharing. So far, I've had 100 subscribers from kind publications recommending me. Your post is a great reminder, though, that it's important to build relationships and recommend mainly smaller publications. I will also check out the self-audit. I've had a great audit from you, but I have changed a lot since then.
Recommendations are a wonderful way to support other publications here on Substack. I am so grateful for all the publications that recommended my newsletter. 18 so far. With 162 subscribers generated. Thank you.
Recommendations is one of my favorite features on Substack. Great way to find new writers who have similar work to my biggest interests. It’s been the best tool for me to find new authors!
Many of my subscribers (including paid) are seniors / elderly and not very tech savvy. They are very confused by the recommendations that appear when they are subscribing to my Substack. I've heard this from other writers here as well. I have to weigh the pros and cons of including recommendations because of this (although I love the idea of cross-recommendations for networking, community building, and growth). Not everyone is tech savvy and some paid subscribers need a bit of hand-holding when they are new to this platform. Not sure how this can be addressed or remedied, just sharing my experience.
My own experience is the same -- recommendations have made a huge difference in my own subscriber growth and I'm working on getting more systematic about recommending others. Thank you for the reminder!
This was such a great reminder, Karen! I just looked and 41% of my subscribers have come from recommendations ~ I really hadn't realized they were so powerful! I am trying to do better with my recommendations for others, as well as actually writing blurbs for the newsletters I care about.
Where can I gt a list of instructions to set up my Substack? I don't know how to set it up. I want to post excerpts from my books and I also want to change that green ball to have my picture.
MY books are on Amazon but I want to take one and do daily posts with personal comments. The book is LIve For Today and it is about bullies and suicide. i want to show what happened to me and let people know there is always hope.,
